Dog Friendly: For the Homes Where our Dogs are Family (And the Sofa Is Fair Game)

Studio Notes No. 002

Great design should support real life — and for many of us, that means wagging tails, muddy paws, and the soft sound of snoring at our feet. The good news? You don’t have to choose between elegant interiors and a life with Rusty and Buster.

(Don’t worry, cat lovers — your turn is coming in a future note!)

Some of our favorite pup-approved accessories include artisan-made dog beds from Commune x Studio Ford and Line Nine, a San Francisco–based brand we love for its neutral, textural approach. We’re also longtime fans of the ceramic pet bowls by Bari Moss, made exclusively for Nickey Kehoe — beautifully crafted and quietly functional.

When working on renovations or new builds, we like to take it a step further by integrating pet-friendly features into the design: a built-in feeding station tucked into the mudroom, an air-tight drawer for food storage, or even a compact, tiled wash zone for muddy paws — a true luxury on rainy days!

Between food, treats, leashes, and toys, it all adds up fast — and storage is key. A designated hook for a leash or two and an indoor/outdoor rug at the back door are simple touches that offer low-maintenance organization and durability. We love a leathered handled bolga basket tucked into any living space to hold our pups favorite toys. These small details go a long way in making daily routines flow a little smoother and our spaces to feel a bit less cluttered.

And yes, we’re proudly in the dogs-on-the-sofa camp. We often specify performance fabrics in tones and textures that help conceal fur and wear — and leave it to us to source a washable throw blanket (or two), this perfectly plaid option, for added peace of mind in your pup’s favorite sunny corner.
